Products and Practices for Lash Extensions

So you got the lashes of your dreams (or your Pinterest board), now it’s time to keep them looking great until your next fill. How you take care of your lashes really determines how often you need a fill, so if you’re looking to stretch from two to three weeks, or three weeks to four, here are some products and tips to make your lashes shine.

First, cleansing daily. Cleaning your lashes well is the best way to keep your lash retention high. Cleaning away the oils from your skin, makeup, and dirt keeps buildup off of your lashes. For cleansing, a gentle, oil-free cleanser is #1 importance, as ingredients like oil and petroleum break down lash adhesive. We carry the Xtreme Lashes Eye Makeup Remover and Cleanser, which is specifically formulated to aid in lash retention.

When using your cleanser, it matters what tools you use to apply it. Any kind of applicator with fibers, like cotton pads, q-tips, or makeup wipes can leave behind small fibers that tangle in with your lashes. To avoid this, use a product like the Flex Tip Applicators or cosmetic sponges to clean the lash line.

After cleansing, you can fluff your lashes back up by combing through with a styling wand. This helps separate the lashes as they dry, giving the lashes more volume. We carry a travel-friendly, reusable styling wand from Xtreme Lashes.

While doing your skincare, be careful to stay away from products that have oils in them because (say it with me folks!) oils break down lash adhesive. If you are an avid eye cream user but are looking for an oil-free alternative, try out the Total Repair Eye Serum from Xtreme Lashes. Want to try it out before you buy a full bottle? We have samples at the salon, ask for one at your next fill!

Post skincare, heading to bed, try sleeping on a silk pillowcase! The silk reduces friction on your lashes, as well as your skin and hair. Silk is gentle and cooling, so not only does it help hair, skin, and lashes, it gives that “cold side of the pillow” feeling every time!

In the morning, before makeup, don’t forget to apply your SPF, as protected skin is happy skin! Many SPFs can contain oils and ingredients that affect retention, so be careful to watch the ingredient list. We carry two lash-friendly sunscreens: Maui Vera Mineral Sunscreen and Earth Harbor Eclipse Sunscreen. Both sunscreens are mineral based, meaning they are clean, reef-friendly, and provide gentle protection. They are as kind to the Earth as they are to your skin!

If your makeup routine includes waterproof makeup, it is time to find alternatives. Waterproof makeup is not safe for lashes, as there are drying ingredients included, and they often require an oil-based cleanser or extra friction to get the products off. For products close to your lash line like eyeliner, cream shadows, and concealer (do not bring mascara near your lash extensions at all!) be careful to use lash-friendly products, like the Xtreme Lashes liners, Glideshadows, and concealers.

Incorporating these alternatives into your routine can help up your retention and give you happier, fuller lashes. Have any questions? Don’t hesitate to reach out to the salon to get in touch with a stylist!
